Somebody thought of an awesome idea – get restaurants to make a fix menu at a pre-determined price for a week. It’s definitely a campaign to attract diners who otherwise would never stumbled into an establishment, as well as to try new stuff on the menu. Some people think that restaurant owners don’t really benefit from this, but that’s not the point because the diners benefit. As all number of courses and prices are fixed at the 2016 Newark restaurant week, some restaurants cut corners by making less awesome dishes and so not all the restaurants are equally in that sense. This post, however, would not be hightlighting the lows, but the tasty and really awesome meal we had at Caffe Gelato. Restaurant week was hosted by the city of Newark, DE, and I’m glad it was done so well.
I opted for the more expensive $22 2-course meal because the appetizer sounded more enticing, and I was in a treat. The salad, which is described as “Arugula and Mixed Greens Salad with candied pecans, goat cheese, roasted shallots, crisp prosciutto Di Parma and honey balsamic vinaigrette,” was heavenly. If you ever wondered how to make boring salad tasty, this might just do the trick (though it probably packed 10,000 calories). The candied pecans give the salad the texture and crunch, and the goat cheese and prosciutto gave the umami and flavor to the dish. To be frank, the salad was so overwhelming that I was kind of let down by the main course.
The main course is pork tenderloin with gnocchi. This is the description, “Cider Brined, Sage, and Garlic Roasted Pork Tenderloin with house-crafted gnocchi with porcini béchamel, crisp pancetta, melted leeks, sautéed mushrooms and cider-sherry reduction” I thought the tenderloin wasn’t that tasty though my friends think otherwise. The main star here is not the protein but is the carb – the gnocchi. I had never have gnocchi but I know of it, and these were tasty.. I was kind of envoius at my friends who ordered the cheaper meal because they got a large bowl of gnocchi. Never knew they taste so good – I might get more of these rather than regular pasta in the future. Don’t want to miss out more in life!
